Teachers learn new technology at Tech Meet Tuscaloosa conference

Teachers in west Alabama are learning ways to better incorporate technology into their classes. More than a dozen of them gathered in at the University of Alabama for the “Tech Meet Tuscaloosa” conference. Certified Master Technology teachers learned how to use a variety of technology from robotics, Google Classroom and how to teach and coding among other topics. “We’re in a technological world. There’s no going back on technology. It’s not going to disappear. It’s only getting bigger and better,” said Katherine Baxter, a teacher from Tuscaloosa’s Central Elementary School. The one-day program was free to area teachers.

With the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season, residents in coastal areas throughout the Southeast are once again being urged to have a plan ready if they have to evacuate … Senkbeil, a meteorologist at the University of Alabama, studies how emergency managers communicate risk in hurricanes. During the Irma evacuation, he interviewed people at rest stops on Florida’s interstates. Many said, when they made the decision to evacuate, Irma was still a Category 4 or 5 hurricane.

‘The Little Mermaid’ production will honor late Hillcrest High student Anna Kamplain

Some proceeds from this weekend’s production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” will benefit a charity that honors the memory of a late Hillcrest High School freshman … LeeAnna Sparks, a University of Alabama student, portrays Ariel. Sparks she said that ever since she was a little girl, she believed she shared personality traits with the mermaid. “She is fun-loving, adventurous, and determined,” Sparks said.

A new study has revealed for the first time the last 500-year flood history of the Mississippi River. It shows a dramatic rise in the size and frequency of extreme floods during the last century — mostly due to projects to straighten, channelize, and bound the river with artificial levees … Matthew Therrell, Ph.D., of the University of Alabama used annual tree rings to reconstruct a detailed record of more recent regional flooding. Combining these methods, the team traced the history of floods back over 500 years — about 350 years further back in time than the oldest written flood records.

Alabama inmate gets support for clemency from Kim Kardashian

An inmate at an Alabama prison is receiving support in her request for clemency from Kim Kardashian-West, who spent Wednesday at the White House encouraging President Trump to end her sentence … “These blanket sentencing policies don’t work very well,” said Jenny Carroll, a law professor at the University of Alabama. “This woman is a classic example of someone, who she can go out and she can be a productive member of the community. And we should give her that opportunity.”

Shortly before Nikolas Cruz carried out a massacre at his former high school in Parkland, Florida, the 19-year-old recorded himself laughing as he plotted to kill at least 20 of his former schoolmates “with an AR-15 and a couple tracer rounds.” … Adam Lankford, a criminal justice professor at the University of Alabama also told the publication that Cruz exhibited all three hallmarks of school shooters in the video — suicidal ideation, perceived victimization and a desire for attention or fame. “I was struck by the fact that he seemed so textbook,” Lankford noted.
