Black News Zone – May 29
A teacher at the University of Alabama is getting more than $500,000 to conduct research with the U.S. Navy. Lemmon is working to help advance technology in the Navy’s plan for constructing ships over the next three decades. That includes a potential shift to methods that would allow ship propulsion and other systems to be powered from a common system, reducing the total amount of power needed.

JSU benefits from bond between universities, good people
Anniston Star – May 30
The heavenly twist of that night is that Jacksonville — the university and the city — was fortunate. No one died, a miracle among miracles, and volunteers swamped Calhoun County’s college city. Among them were teams from several other Alabama campuses, Tuscaloosa and Auburn included. Administrators from the University of Alabama shared knowledge from their school’s 2011 tornado recovery. Auburn University dispatched members of its campus police force and emergency management team. JSU alum Kevin Hoult, director of University Housing and Residence Life at Auburn, brought about 10 people to help paint the former Kitty Stone Elementary School before JSU students moved in.

Stormy Side Fight Brews Before Cohen Heads Back to Court
Courthouse News – May 29
The escalating feud between attorneys for President Donald Trump’s “fixer” Michael Cohen and adult-film actress Stormy Daniels could overshadow the primary focus for Wednesday’s hearing: to sort out attorney-client privilege issues in the ongoing criminal investigation stemming from a raid on Cohen’s properties … University of Alabama Law Professor Joyce Vance, a former federal prosecutor with 25 years of experience, warned the government to stay above the fray. “If I was the prosecutor, I’d duck the drama between Mr. Avenatti and Mr. Cohen, so long as it wasn’t interfering with my case, and see what drops out of their pockets during their fist fight,” Vance said in an interview.

Best of New Orleans – May 29
The ghost of Johannes Gutenberg lives in the Lower 9th Ward. The 15th-century German inventor of movable type not only made the Bible widely available for the first time, but also everything else that has appeared in print ever since … The recent grand opening of its Artist Book Collection put it all in context with a lecture by University of Alabama professor Jeff Weddle, whose Bohemian New Orleans: The Story of the Outsider and Loujon Press describes how Jon Edgar and Louise “Gypsy Lou” Webb crafted beat poetry classics like Charles Bukowski’s first published book and their own edgy Outsider literary journal on their letterpress in the French Quarter in the 1960s.
