UA student receives Fulbright Scholarship

Shelby Smithson is graduating with a master’s in social work and received the prestigious Fulbright scholarship to travel overseas and teach English for 10 months. She is one of 15 UA students to receive the award, making UA one of the top institutions to produce Fulbright scholars.

”Better late than never” is a fitting phrase for this season of Pat Cassity’s life. She started school at the UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA in 1947, in music performance, which grew to be very demanding. The pressure of that and the pressure of other things that were happening in my life at the time, some rebellion had built up, so I took off. She moved to Alaska, and quickly realized it was a mistake.

UA Marine Science Club donates recycled art to DISL

The University of Alabama Marine Science Club used bottle caps to illustrate the impact plastic debris can have on marine life. “Bottle caps are a particularly poignant medium to work with, because they are everyday objects that we’re all familiar with. Yet, very few of them are able to be recycled due to inconsistencies with plastic type,” Blair Morrison, president of the UA Marine Science Club, explained.

Odenville Middle School takes first and third place in state speech competition

The Odenville Middle School Student Government Association and Schoolwide Leadership Team recently attended the Alabama Student Council’s State Conference at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. They won various awards, including first place in the Middle School Speech Competition. This makes eight years in a row OMS has won. The winner was seventh grader Lisa Lambert.
