UA Study — State crash data shows seat belt use critical in saving lives

Those involved in auto crashes while not wearing seat belts are 40 times more likely to die than those who buckle up, according to an analysis of state crash records from the past five years. For the study, University of Alabama researchers at the Center for Advanced Public Safety examined crash records from 2013 through 2017 provided by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, or ALEA.

Calhoun County cities, towns, struggle with population decline in 2017

Calhoun County’s cities and towns either shrank in population or saw flat growth last year, the latest in a years-long trend for the area, according to a federal report released today … Ahmad Ijaz, economist for the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama, said attracting people into an area is a difficult feat to accomplish. “It’s difficult because different people are demanding certain jobs … usually high-wage and manufacturing,” Ijaz said. “You have to give someone an incentive to move.”

Unmarked Bryce Hospital graves could complicate planned ALDOT Tuscaloosa road project

Unmarked graves along US-82 in Tuscaloosa could hold up lane expansions slated for 2019 if the Alabama Department of Transportation would have to move the grave sites for the project … The graves were discovered, using ground penetrating radar, by the University of Alabama’s Office of Archaeological Research, which will assist in any movement of the graves that is needed.

UA partners with Firestorm to provide an online tool for schools to do threat assessments

The University of Alabama now is partnering with firestorm in an effort to cut down on school violence. The online program is called BERTHA, which stands for Behavorial Risk Threat Assessment. Its creators say the tool helps teachers and faculty learn to spot behaviors in students that might mean something is wrong.

Energy Department Announces The Ohio State Takes Home the Top Spot in EcoCAR 3 Competition

Today, the Energy Department is announcing that The Ohio State has taken home first place in the final year of EcoCAR 3, an Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors Co. Competition sparse in many Alabama legislative districts

The powers of incumbency and district gerrymandering are squeezing out competition for seats in the Alabama Legislature, analysts say …”Most people don’t realize how many districts go uncontested and I think that if this received more attention, voters would be concerned,” University of Alabama political science Professor Richard Fording said. “There is no question that it is bad for democracy. All the research shows that elected officials are far more likely to be responsive to constituent interests if they regularly face competition in elections.”

Ag center moves quietly toward construction

The purchase of the first piece of property for the Lauderdale County Agricultural Event Center has lifted hopes among supporters that construction on the $45 million project can actually get underway in August … The project is a collaborative effort between Lauderdale County school officials, who are seeking a new career technical center to replace the aging Allen Thornton Center, and representatives from Northwest-Shoals Community College and the University of Alabama.
