UA Wins Wheelchair Tennis National Championship

UA’s Wheelchair Tennis Team celebrates its fourth team national championship.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Wheelchair Tennis Team won its fourth team national championship April 22 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

“I’m proud of this team and its unwavering competitive spirit,” said Evan Enquist, UA’s head wheelchair tennis coach. “It feels great to stay the No. 1 team in the country, and we can’t wait to return next year.”

Maude Jacques and Shelby Baron led the team as the two highest point earners for the Crimson Tide.

In total, Jacques won six of her eight matches over the weekend, posting six points for UA.

Baron, a 2016 Paralympian, placed second in her singles flight, earning the team five points.

Together, Baron and Jacques, the defending 2017 doubles champions, won their doubles flight, securing their spot in the doubles final.

With one point awarded for each singles and doubles win and only the top two scorers from each team added, UA overcame the University of Florida by three points to maintain their place as the No. 1 team in the nation.

“It feels so good to see our student athletes and coaches win this national championship,” said Brent Hardin, athletic director for Adapted Athletics. “This is something they will be able to look back on with pride for many years to come.”
