Blast off! Alabama students mentor middle schoolers in soaring rocketry challenge

The Tuscaloosa Rocketry Challenge, organized by Alabama Rocketry Association and Alabama Students for the Exploration and Development of Space, blasted off at UA’s outdoor recreation fields last Friday … Leading up to the event, UA College of Engineering and Honors College students in a service learning course visited each participating middle school to teach them the history of space exploration, a brief intro to physics and how engineering relates to what they are learning in their middle school science classes.

Experience of black doctoral students underscores need to increase diversity in STEM fields

They do so knowing they will face challenges, but the barriers described by black men who shared their experiences as part of a six-year study show how race was a greater obstacle than they expected … Burt and co-authors Krystal Williams, University of Alabama; and William Smith, University of Utah, interviewed 21 black men pursuing engineering graduate degrees at a research university.

UA researchers say placing a waiting period on gun sales could lower suicides

Researchers at the University of Alabama and UAB say placing a waiting period on gun sales reduces suicides. The study shows if a seller makes customers wait to complete their purchases, firearm-related suicides decrease by between two and five percent. As for homicide rates, purchase delays are not associated with significant changes.

Tennessee ranks third from the bottom in tax burden

A recent study ranks Tennessee 48th in the overall tax burden on residents. In order to determine which states tax their residents most aggressively, WalletHub, a personal finance Web site, compared the 50 states based on the three components of state tax burden — property taxes, individual income taxes, and sales and excise taxes — as a share of total personal income … Susan Pace Hamill, professor of law and honors professor at the University of Alabama school of law, said balance is important in taxation. “Contrary to erroneous assumptions, low state tax burdens do not promote long-term, stable economic growth,” she said.

Trustbuilders adds estate planning attorney in Urbanna

Trustbuilders Law Group, Buxton & Buxton P.C., has added estate planning attorney M. Benjamin Tiefenback to its staff in the Urbanna office. Tiefenback served as a legal intern to the senior partner in the firm, elder law attorney Joseph T. Buxton for two summers before graduating from Regent Law School cum laude in 2017 and passing the Virginia Bar last summer. He is presently pursuing a post graduate law program in tax law with the University of Alabama.
