Black Scholars Day Recognizes Top Academic Award Winners

The University of Alabama’s Black Faculty and Staff Association recently recognized students who received premier academic awards for 2017-18. The students were honored on Black Scholars Day in March.

Harold Bishop Award

Awarded to seniors with the highest academic standing honoring the legacy of one of the first black professors on campus: Kayla M. Bell, Randi Michelle Blackmon, Camille C. Carr, Norris L. Davis, III, Anna B. Johnson, Danille L. Jones, Tedra Jasmine Roper, Resha T. Swanson, Lauren Michael Tucker, Erin L. Washington.

Archie Wade Award

Awarded to juniors with the highest academic standing honoring the legacy of the first black professor at UA: Hanna Anissa Benkhraba, Byron J. Autherine Lucy Foster Award

Autherine Lucy Foster Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to a sophomore in honor of the first black student to attend UA: Salena Lee.

Vivian Malone Jones Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to the junior with the highest academic standing who exemplifies the spirit of Vivian Malone Jones in honor of the first African-American graduate of UA: Kaitlyn E. Thomas.

African-American Alumni Network Endowed Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded annually to a matriculating undergraduate student demonstrating academic promise: Marquis D. Hollingsworth and Malaine M. Hatch.

John England Award

Awarded to a law student in honor of the first African-American student in the first class (1969) to include African-Americans: Meighan Parker.

Joffre and Zadie Whisenton Award

Awarded to an African-American graduate student receiving a doctoral degree with the highest academic standing and graduating in current year in honor of the first African-American student to receive a Ph.D. from UA: Schernavia Hall.

Cleophus Thomas Award

Awarded to the graduating seniors with the highest academic standing honoring the legacy of the first black SGA president of UA: Kynnedi Jasmin Elizabeth Fye, Asia Monet Hayes, Christina L. Holmes, Kierra L. Howell, Anthony R. Lipscomb, Obie J. Moultrie Jr, Ronald Roy Nelson Jr.; Yvonne F. Russell, Shanna Jarea Wallace, Alyana J. Watson.

The mission of the Black Faculty and Staff Association is to contribute to the betterment of UA by serving as an advocate for educational equity, with an emphasis on African-­American students, and the professional needs of its members. ​To that end, this organization promotes and provides opportunities for networking among individuals and groups to articulate mutual concerns and advance educational opportunities.
