Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps to build homes for people in need, not only in America but all around the world. The UA chapter of Habitat for Humanity is hoping to engage more students through awareness events such as Act! Speak! Build! Week April 9-13.

Daniel Nielsen, the team leader for UA’s chapter, said the main goal of the week is to raise awareness about the housing insecurity that exists in this community. He also hopes events such as Act! Speak! Build! Week will attract more volunteers.

Volunteers demonstrate their work during the 2017 Act! Speak! Build! Week.

The week’s activities include:

Monday, April 9: A panel discussion with guest speakers Ellen Potts and Sonya Kemp will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in 125 ten Hoor. The panel will examine how people face housing insecurity and the serious needs of people outside of campus.

Tuesday, April 10: A poverty expo will be held on the second floor of Ferguson Center at a table across from Auntie Anne’s from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pamphlets, pictures, stories and information about Habitat for Humanity will be provided.

Wednesday, April 11: A Pledge Against Poverty wall will be erected on the promenade for people to sign from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each $1 donation counts as a Greek point (all day, limit of one Greek point per person).

Thursday, April 12: A sleep out on the promenade from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. will feature speakers discussing poverty and food insecurity.

Friday, April 13: A fundraiser with Alpha Tau Omega fraternity will raise money for Habitat for Humanity (time/place TBD).
