Sonic Frontiers Presents Rova Saxophone Quartet in Season Finale

Rova Saxophone Quartet

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s Sonic Frontiers concert series presents the Rova Saxophone Quartet in its final concert of the 2017-2018 season.

On March 26, at 7:30 p.m., the quartet, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary as an ensemble, will perform at UA’s School of Music Moody Concert Hall at 810 Second Ave.

Rova is one of the longest-standing groups in the music movement that has its roots in post-bop, free jazz, avant-rock and 20th century new music, said Dr. Andrew Raffo Dewar, UA associate professor of New College and artistic director of the Sonic Frontiers concert series.

Founded in 1978, Rova explores the synthesis of composition and collective improvisation, creating exciting, genre-bending music. In 1983 Rova became the first American new music group to tour the Soviet Union. A documentary video of the tour, ”Saxophone Diplomacy,” aired on PBS stations throughout the U.S. in 1984.

Rova comes to Tuscaloosa fresh from a new release titled ”In Transverse Time” on the Victo label. The members of the group are Bruce Ackley, Steve Adams, Larry Ochs and Jon Raskin.

Sonic Frontiers is a cutting-edge concert series of innovative and experimental music that enriches the cultural life of West Alabama and invites creative exchange between world-class performers of adventurous music, students and the greater community through public performances and lively post-concert discussions. All Sonic Frontiers events are free and open to the public.

This event is sponsored by The University of Alabama’s New College, the School of Music’s jazz studies program and the College of Arts and Sciences.
