The commendations came flowing in this month, as University of Alabama Police Department Officer Brad Thomas was recognized as the Exchange Club of Tuscaloosa’s Officer of the Year for UAPD for his courage in the line of duty.

This month, UAPD presented him with an award and a medal, and the Exchange Club of Tuscaloosa gave him a plaque.

Thomas, who has been with UAPD for six years and has a total of 14 years law enforcement experience, said it’s nice to be acknowledged for doing the job that law enforcement officers do.

“I spent four-and-a-half years with the SWAT team at TPD, so I’ve been in danger before,” he said. “You rely on your training, and not fear or instinct, so you do not stress in situations like this.”

On Oct. 15, 2017, Thomas responded to a call and helped capture the suspect of a shooting on The Strip in a matter of seconds.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of Officer Thomas,” said UAPD Chief John Hooks. “His actions exemplify what it means to be a police officer at The University of Alabama.”

“…He remained conscious of the safety of those around him throughout this highly dangerous and stressful encounter. His quick and thoughtful actions leading to the subsequent apprehension of the suspect cannot be understated.” UAPD Chief John Hooks

Betsy Jarnigan, president of the local Exchange Club, said every year the service organization holds Law Enforcement Appreciation Day to recognize outstanding first responders from UAPD, the Tuscaloosa Police Department, Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and Northport Police Department.

She said Thomas came highly recommended for the honor.

“We provide a meal for them and the attorney general comes and gives a keynote address at Indian Hills Country Club,” she said. “They receive a plaque from the club. The entire law enforcement community – judges, officers, their families – come out each year in support.”
