The University of Alabama: Where Legends Are Made.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama swept the American Advertising Federation awards competition in Tuscaloosa last week winning 13 awards, including three Best of Show awards, eight out of nine Gold awards presented and two Silver awards.

The AAF Tuscaloosa chapter stretches across western Alabama and encompasses some of eastern Mississippi.

Where Legends Are Made won six awards, including Overall Best of Show, Best of Print and four Gold awards for magazine ad (single), magazine advertising campaign, local television commercial and integrated brand identity campaign.

The University’s campaign for the Performing Arts Academic Center won five awards, including Best of Broadcast and four Gold awards for cinematography, video editing, magazine and design.

UA won a Silver award for collateral material publications design for The Giving Effect, a report mailed to University donors, and a Silver in the category of collateral material for a special event for the President’s Cabinet spring meeting invitation.

All Gold award winners advance to the district competition in April, with national award winners announced in June in Chicago.

Where Legends Are Made was created by The University of Alabama’s Division of Strategic Communications, with production assistance from RSQ in Mobile. The campaign for the Performing Arts Academic Center was developed by UA’s Division of Strategic Communications in partnership with UA’s Division for Advancement.

“Awards competitions are important because they allow us to measure ourselves against our peers, not only in higher education, but also against the best in private industry,” said Linda Bonnin, UA’s vice president for strategic communications. “It’s great validation that we are hitting the mark with our marketing and communications efforts as we continue to tell the University’s story in creative, authentic ways.”

During the month of February, UA’s Division of Strategic Communications has collected 22 awards, including 10 at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education District III conference in Atlanta, where its honors included two Grand awards for Where Legends Are Made and the Performing Arts Academic Center.

Founded in 1905, the American Advertising Federation is based in Washington, D.C., and it is comprised of more than 200 local organizations representing nearly 40,000 advertising professionals across the nation. Advertising competitions are judged by top industry professionals from across the nation. Judges for the AAF Tuscaloosa competition were Drew Beamer, art director at Fox Fuel Creative in Nashville; Michael Rivera, associate creative director at Big Red Rooster in Atlanta; and Allison Robbins, general manager of Intersection Advertising in Muncie, Indiana.
