Delaware chemical startup amid $1M seed round

A Delaware-based chemical industry startup is in the middle of raising a $1 million seed round, with Philadelphia’s Robin Hood Ventures leading the first close of $540,000. ThruPore is based in New Castle but was founded at the University of Alabama. It creates catalysts used to quicken chemical reactions.

UA Dance Marathon raises $341K for Miracle Network

The annual University of Alabama Dance Marathon raised $341,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital at Children’s of Alabama. The marathon, during which students danced for 13 hours, was the culmination of a year-long, student-led fundraising effort.

Trudier Harris Wins Nonfiction Writing Award From the University of Alabama

Life 360 app could help track possible kidnappings

In light of a little girl being kidnapped from South Carolina and found in Alabama, then Tuesday morning, a man found in Irondale told police he was kidnapped; we are looking into an app that could help you find your family or help them find you … “Mother, father, and child and at any point you can pull up the location of any family member. If you wanted to make sure your kid didn’t leave a certain area, you can set that up within the app,” said Matthew Hudnall, Associate Director of University of Alabama Business Analytics.

Renowned organist to perform at Bluff Park UMC

On March 4, the Bluff Park United Methodist Church will be hosting Dr. Faythe Freese for their annual organ recital series. Started in 2003 as a way to raise money for a major organ maintenance project, senior pastor Mike Holly said the series continued after the project was completed. This year will mark the 16th year Bluff Park UMC has held the event … Freese is the organ department coordinator and a professor of organ at the University of Alabama School of Music.

Robot toys that teach your kids to code

You’ve seen apps and toys that promise to teach your child to code. Now enter the robots. But experts like Jeff Gray, a computer science professor at the University of Alabama and an adviser to the nonprofit coding education group Code.org, say kids can derive other benefits from coding robots and similar toys. They can, for instance, learn “persistence and grit” when the toys inevitably do something unintended, he says.
