Study Abroad … It’s Easier Than You Think

Study Abroad … It’s Easier Than You Think

By Alexandria Cashmer

I can’t because ….

That’s a common way of answering when students are asked about studying abroad. However, choosing to study abroad isn’t as difficult as it might seem, and The University of Alabama Education Abroad office has all the answers on to how to make it happen.

You can have your questions answered and have fun at the Spring 2018 Study Abroad Fair Monday, Feb. 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Witt Activity Center in Presidential Village. Attend the fair and meet education abroad staff, UA faculty and affiliate program representatives while enjoying free food and drinks, a rock-climbing wall and opportunities to win prizes.

So, why do students say they think they can’t participate in these experiences? Here are the top four misconceptions about study abroad.

No. 1: It is too expensive.

Many ways exist to make education abroad easier on your bank account. Making a financial plan early on and applying to a few of the many available scholarships can help lighten the load.

No. 2: There are no opportunities for my major.

UA has sent students from every field on study-abroad trips. Some majors and minors may have more opportunities than others, but there are options for everyone.

No. 3: Going abroad will push back my graduation date.

Education abroad advisers will work with you to pick a program with classes that count toward your degree. These may be for major, minor, language or elective credits. Whatever the case may be, your time abroad will help to satisfy some degree requirement.

No. 4: I can’t study abroad because I don’t know another language.

Many students are afraid of the language barrier between them and residents of the country where they would study. Although immersion programs are available for those wanting to practice a second language, most programs abroad through UA are taught in English.

More questions? Still curious? Come to the fair to learn more about your options for study abroad.

An Action Card is required for entry. The event is worth one greek point.
