FBI Telephone Scam Alert

  • February 5th, 2018

The University of Alabama Police Department wants to make faculty and staff aware of a recent spate of scam telephone calls to employees of universities. The scammers use spoofing, a process by which the caller ID shows a legitimate number.

In this scam, the scammer has spoofed the telephone number for a local FBI office, and claims to be investigating the recipient for tax fraud. The scammer uses personal information that can be found using a general internet search to bolster the ruse that the recipient of the call is being investigated.

The scam may also involve multiple people, multiple phone calls and threats of arrest.

If you receive such a telephone call, do not share personal information and hang up immediately. If you received such a telephone call and shared personal information or sent money, please contact UAPD at 205-348-5454.
