The University of Alabama Police Department wants to make faculty and staff aware of a recent spate of scam telephone calls to employees of universities. The scammers use spoofing, a process by which the caller ID shows a legitimate number.
In this scam, the scammer has spoofed the telephone number for a local FBI office, and claims to be investigating the recipient for tax fraud. The scammer uses personal information that can be found using a general internet search to bolster the ruse that the recipient of the call is being investigated.
The scam may also involve multiple people, multiple phone calls and threats of arrest.
