Here come the (progressive) women? After annual marches, Alabama women look to populate ballots

Tabitha Isner has never run for elected office before. She’s a 36-year-old ordained minister whose spent most of her career in policy work, focusing on early childhood education. But after learning the ropes of preparing for an election, Isner now says the timing seems perfect to take a shot at Congress … William Stewart, a professor emeritus of political science at the University of Alabama and a longtime observer of state politics, said he believes the large number of women who rejected Moore’s candidacy had more to do with the allegations against the candidate than anything else.

UA ROTC wins competition

The University of Alabama’s ROTC team is heading to West Point after winning a challenge over the weekend. This is a picture of UA’s Army ROTC ranger team. Saturday, they took first place in the Brigade Ranger Challenge in Camp Blanding, Florida.

In fact, she just got back from California where she performed her original song “American girl” at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

UA to receive funding from USDA

The USDA today awarding more than a million dollars in grants to Alabama. It’s part of a program that invests in broadband to help rural communities connect to educational and health care services. UAB, the University of Alabama and the Bibb County health department will all receive money.

New Study Reveals Perceived Gender Bias Against Women Is Dominant Factor In College Major Choice For Females
Public Now – Jan. 22
College-bound women are not less likely to enter specific fields because more math or science is required, but rather because of the gender discrimination they are likely to encounter in those fields, finds a new nationally representative longitudinal study published in the American Educational Research Journal … In addition to Cimpian, the study’s co-authors include Colleen M. Ganley of Florida State University, Casey E. George of the University of Louisville, and Martha B. Makowski of the University of Alabama. The study is based on work supported by the Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education (Grant No. R305B100017) and the National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation.

UA announces A-Day football game

The University of Alabama announced it will hold it )s annual a-day spring football game on April 21st at 1 P.M. As always, admission to the game is free. More information about events for fans and parking will be released at a later date.

Nick’s Kids Foundation to build 17th Habitat for Humanity Home
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – Jan. 22
Habitat for Humanity is laying the groundwork for its newest home, and it has the University of Alabama’s National championship win to thank for that. After the April 27, 2011, tornados that devastated Tuscaloosa, Nick and Terry Saban committed to building 13 homes to celebrate the 13 National championships Alabama football had won. As Alabama football won two more National championships in 2011 and 2012, the project grew to 15 and now they’re up to its 17th home.

The University of Alabama estimates 40,000 people attended Saturday’s celebration.
