University of Alabama Tops Fundraising Record
U.S. News – Oct. 28
The University of Alabama says it has had its best year ever for fundraising. A statement from the university says it took in more than $120 million in gifts and pledges during the 2016-2017 fiscal year. That surpasses the previous record of more than $116 million in 2012. The school says money this year came in from more than 58,000 donors. The university received 14 gifts that exceeded $1 million.

UA, ALDOT Lay Groundwork for Future Self-Driving Vehicles

Advanced technology used to make traveling safer and more efficient is the focus of a new project led by The University of Alabama and the Alabama Department of Transportation. Tuscaloosa is the first city in Alabama to install the technology that will collect data for research used to decrease travel time, reduce vehicle crashes and lay the groundwork for future self-driving vehicles. “We expect significant advances in the U.S. transportation system during the next 10 years, made possible through many of the technologies currently being tested in Alabama,” said Dr. Bharat Balasubramanian, executive director of The University of Alabama’s Center for Advanced Vehicle Technologies.

White nationalist and provocateur Richard Spencer had left the University of Florida on Oct. 19 when the day’s most serious trouble erupted just beyond the campus … “My general take is that the number of people who are highly motivated and dedicated to this stuff are relatively small in number,” said George Hawley, who teaches political science at the University of Alabama and is the author of a recent book about the alt-right. “But the ones who are and have the capacity to do so are willing to make long trips.”

‘Attention seekers’ cost the NHS £1.7 million a year

Attention seekers’ who pretend to be ill are costing the NHS £1.7million a year, official figures reveal. The number of hospital beds taken up by patients with fake disorders has more than trebled in the past decade, according to NHS Digital statistics. Each faker is estimated to cost the NHS between £800 to £900 a day … Dr Marc Feldman, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Alabama, added: “Before you’d have to go to medical libraries and read up on the illnesses you were going to fabricate. And then you would have to go and fake the symptoms so you would have to be a good actor.”

Alabama’s Senate special election: You may never see it done like this one again

The campaign to fill Alabama’s Senate seat has had all the elements of a political carnival with appearances from the president, current and former vice presidents, political personalities and celebrities … “We can’t afford these special elections which generally attract only a small number of voters,” said William Stewart, professor emeritus of political sciences at the University of Alabama.

Honoring our fallen

The Spanns came to Busby’s Tuscaloosa art studio about half a dozen times as Busby worked on the bust, making sure it was as close to Spann’s likeness as possible, Busby said. Spann’s bust is now on display at the University of Alabama Office of Veterans and Military Affairs in Tuscaloosa and likely will be moved to Auburn, where Spann went to school. Since completing Spann’s bust, Busby has finished two more, including one of Andrew Hand, an Army specialist killed in action in Afghanistan in July 2010.
