The University of Alabama’s Hispanic-Latino Association, or HLA, will celebrate Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

As part of the observance, the HLA has a number of events planned.

  • Sept. 15: Hispanic/Latinx read-in will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on the front steps of Morgan Hall.
  • Sept. 17: Family Game Night, sponsored by the School of Social Work and the Women and Gender Resource Center, will be from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17, at the UA women’s soccer team game against the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.  Admission to the game is free. Attendees can enjoy giveaways, a bouncy house, games, and information about Hispanic/Latinx heritage.
  • Sept. 21: The Hispanic/Latinx Festival will take place from 7-10 p.m. at the Ferguson Student Center.
  • Oct. 2: Latinx Activism 101 will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library.
  • Oct. 3: The Hispanic/Latinx Art Gallery reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the Ferguson Student Center Gallery.
  • Oct. 5: The documentary “Dolores” will play from 7-8:15 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. The documentary is based on the life of Dolores Huerta, an American labor leader and civil rights activist who co-founded the United Farm Workers of America.
  • Oct. 9: A screening of “Viva” will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Ferguson Student Center. “Viva” is a 2015 movie about a young male drag performer in Cuba and his strained relationship with his father.
  • Oct. 10: The National Association of Hispanic Journalists will discuss “Latinx Success in the Media” from 6:30-8 p.m. in 104B Reese Phifer Hall.

In addition to these events, the Hispanic-Latino Association will hold general meetings on Sept. 18, 19 and 20. The Sept. 18 meeting will be a joint meeting with Alabama Students Without Borders.
