UA has a new VP for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Dr. Christine Taylor has served as an officer of diversity for six years at Perdue University, giving her plenty of experience for this inaugural position here at UA … Dr. Taylor was named the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at UA this year.

Buy for Rise offers deep discounts from local merchants
Tuscaloosa News – Sept. 6
Brand-new items from more than 75 local retailers will be offered at deep discounts during the annual Buy for Rise sale, which will be held Sept. 22-23. All proceeds will benefit the University of Alabama Rise Center, which serves children with disabilities and their typically developing peers, from ages 8 weeks to 5 years.
 
“We Are Selma” exhibit features portraits by UA alumna

The public is invited to a free Wednesday night lecture at the University of Alabama by a photographer whose latest art exhibit focuses on the people of Selma. Kathryn Mayo, a UA alumna and a native of Selma, will discuss “We Are Selma: The Selma Portrait Project” at 7 p.m. Wednesday in room 205 in the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library.

North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences to Host BugFest

Mexican red-rump tarantulas, brown marmorated stinkbugs, whip-tail scorpions, Madagascar hissing cockroaches, tobacco hornworm hawkmoths, death feigning beetles and dragonflies … At 10:30 a.m., learn how you can get your kids involved in our Dragonfly Detectives citizen science project. At 1:30 p.m. enjoy “The Secret Lives of Dragonflies,” a presentation by John Abbott, director of research and collections at the University of Alabama.

Tippets loves to serve others

Jared Tippets has spent the past three years attending the University of Alabama and serving as a missionary in the Dominican Republic. His last experience, though, was quite different. In June and July, he was in India working with those affected by leprosy and their children. His sponsoring organization was Rising Star Outreach (RSO) of Chennault, India.

Campus groups organize drives for Harvey relief

Hurricane Harvey made landfall on the Texas coast late last month, causing historic flooding and damage that will last for years. The University of Alabama community knows the catastrophic impact of a natural disaster well, so following the landfall of Hurricane Harvey people from all corners of campus have come together to provide relief to those affected by the storm.
