After a first round of voting failed to yield a single candidate receiving a majority of the votes, two candidates are running for the Republican nomination in a race that has gained national prominence … According to Richard Fording, a professor of political science at the University of Alabama, this election “will continue to be influenced by Trump and that it will flat out be a referendum on his performance as president.”

Buy for Rise offers deep discounts on merchandise

Brand-new items from dozens of local retailers will be offered at deep discounts during the annual Buy for Rise sale, which will be held Friday and Saturday. Retailers include Gracefully Done, Campus Collection, Barton’s Nursery & Gifts, Hudson Poole Jewelers, Pants Store, Woods and Water, Pure Barre Tuscaloosa and more. A preview night and silent auction will be held at the Rise Center, which is at 600 Johnny Stallings Drive, from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Gorgas House exhibit displays life of William Gorgas

History is all around the University of Alabama’s campus, from the President’s Mansion to Bryant Hospital. The history of the University is best seen in the Gorgas House Museum, found in front of Morgan Hall.  The house, established in 1831, provides a window into the University’s past. Currently, the museum’s exhibit, “William C. Gorgas and the Great War,” highlights the life of William C. Gorgas, son of Josiah and Amelia Gorgas, who lived in the Gorgas House, and the lives of Tuscaloosans during World War I.

Aronson chosen for mentorship program – Naperville native David Aronson and his business Peanut Butter was one of six startups chosen to take part in the BMO Harris/1871 FinTech Partnership three-month mentorship program … Two Naperville residents attending the University of Alabama participated in the school’s Cooperative Education Program during the summer. Matthew Carney worked with Adtran and Alec Kestler worked with Mercedes-Benz. In the program, students alternate periods of full-time study with periods of full-time employment related to their academic major or career interests.

Roy Moore, Luther Strange meet in historic Lincoln-Douglas debate

Tonight in Alabama, Republican Senate candidates Judge Roy Moore and incumbent Sen. Luther Strange will face off for the first and only debate of the runoff primary election … Political scientists are excited, but cautious. The University of Alabama’s Robert Imbody thinks the Lincoln-Douglas format will offer a “distinct clash.” Professor emeritus of political sciences at the University of Alabama, William Stewart is skeptical that Moore and Strange can pull pull it off successfully.

Guided tours of museum to be offered for Hispanic Heritage Month
