ALDOT and University of Alabama create new Traffic Management Center

A partnership between the Alabama Department of Transportation and The University of Alabama makes it more likely drivers in West Alabama will have a smooth ride for years to come. The Traffic Management Center has been running since June. State and school officials working there believe they have already had a positive impact on driving habits here in West Alabama.

Tuscaloosa County’s unemployment rate is about 4%

An economic specialist at The University of Alabama says that Tuscaloosa County’s unemployment rate is about 4 percent, and it is down compared to last year. The specialist also suspects that the unemployment rate will continue to go down even more, maybe to 3.7 percent by this time next year.

Study Showing 70 Years of Progress for LGBTQ Students Raises Concerns About Trump Agenda

The author of a new study showing slow but consistent progress in the experiences of LGBTQ students on college campuses over the past 70 years is concerned that for the first time since 1944, that trend may be reversing … “The gradual acceptance and affirmation of LGBTQ people in mainstream society are inextricably linked to increasingly progressive social policies for LGBTQ people and more positive perceptions of campus climate in higher education,” says study author Jason Garvey, assistant professor of higher education and student affairs at the University of Vermont, who co-authored the article with graduate students Laura A. Sanders and Maureen A. Flint from the University of Alabama.

Fanfare honors sculpture artist

Fanfare will welcome the sculpting talents of Jamey Grimes to the Contemporary Art Gallery. The opening reception will be held Oct. 11 from 5-7 p.m., and Grimes’ works will be on display in CAG until Nov. 10. His interest in art became more specified to sculpture over time … While in graduate school, Grimes sought out exhibition opportunities. He has displayed work in the Woods Hall Gallery in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and the Kronos Gallery in Staunton, Virginia among others. He became a full-time instructor at the University of Alabama in 2008.
