DEVOTION TO NATIONAL, RELIGIOUS SYMBOL ALLEVIATES STRESS OF IMMIGRATIONMexican immigrants living in a rural Mississippi county and who are highly devoted to the Virgin of Guadalupe coped better with immigration-related stress than those less devoted to the religious, Mexican symbol, according to a study by anthropologists at UA. UA TO HOLD COMMENCEMENT EXERCISE AUG. 5 – UA will hold its summer commencement exercise Aug. 5, at Coleman Coliseum on campus. More than 750 undergraduates and graduate students from all schools and colleges are expected to participate. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. UA anticipates awarding 1,442 degrees. GRADUATE STUDENT RECEIVES MINORITY FELLOWSHIP – UA political science doctoral candidate Cameryn Blackmore was named one of 23 2017-18 APSA Minority Fellowship Program Fellows for the spring by the American Political Science Association. Each year APSA awards funds to support doctoral degree expenses. Blackmore, a 29-year-old native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is researching how judicial policy-making has impacted closing of the achievement gap that exists between black and white K-12 students. UA TO UNVEIL PARKING SPACE FOR PURPLE HEART RECIPIENTS – On Aug. 9, UA officials will unveil a parking space designated for recipients of the Purple Heart, a medal awarded to men and women who were wounded or killed in combat. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. in the row of spaces just west of the Ferguson Center along Campus Drive. Members of UA’s veteran community will speak at the ceremony.
