$1.7 MILLION GRANT TO INCREASE LATINO NURSES WITH ADVANCED DEGREES — UA’s Capstone College of Nursing recently received a $1.7 million grant to increase the number of baccalaureate-prepared Latino nurses. Funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration Nursing Workforce Diversity Program, the Bama-Latino Project will target and recruit 80 Latino associate degree registered nurses and prepare them for a Bachelor of Science in nursing via the Capstone College of Nursing’s online RN-BSN mobility program. UA TO HOST WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL CAMP – More than 30 children between the ages of 9 and 18 from nine different states will learn basic techniques and advanced concepts of wheelchair basketball from coaches and staff of national championship programs of the UA’s Adapted Athletics program. The annual camp begins Thursday, July 6 and runs through Sunday, July 9. Campers will practice and scrimmage at UA’s Student Recreation Center, near the site of the program’s new multi-purpose adapted sport facility, which is under construction. Campers will practice Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Reporters are invited to attend practices and interview coaches and campers before or after either of the sessions. SATURDAY IN THE PARK FEATURES NATIVE FLUTE MAKING — UA’s Moundville Archaeological Park will hold its Saturday in the Park program from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 8, in front of the Jones Archaeological Museum. The topic is Native Flute Making with Charlie Mato-Toyela. Saturday in the Park is a series of demonstrations and presentations related to Native Americans, archaeology, natural history, sustainable gardening and more. PAUL R. JONES GALLERY OPENS EXHIBITION ON MEMORY — The Paul R. Jones Gallery in downtown Tuscaloosa will open a new exhibition, “Collected Memory,” Friday, July 7. The exhibition will run until Aug. 25 and showcases a collection of works created by artists of Southern heritage including Benny Andrews, Fahamu Pecou and 27 other artists. The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, photographs and works of other media and is free and open to the public. CULVERHOUSE ANNOUNCES 2017 BUSINESS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES — UA’s Culverhouse College of Commerce announced the names of six business professionals to be inducted into the Alabama Business Hall of Fame.  Inductees are: Charles E. Adair, of Montgomery; Dr. James R. Andrews, of Birmingham; William R. Battle, of Tuscaloosa; Dr. Dorothy Davidson, of Huntsville; John D. Johns, of Birmingham; and Don Logan, of Birmingham. They will be honored during the Alabama Business Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Nov. 9 at the Haven in Birmingham.
