Three UA students challenge each other to succeed after reading “The Pact”

Brian, Trent and Brendan, all three are going into their sophomore year at The University of Alabama. Three young men from the Birmingham area with a special connection to three pretty famous doctors out of New Jersey, Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins and Rameck Hunt, authors of the best-selling book The Pact. They were teenagers when they made a vow not to become victims of the streets. They promised to hold each other accountable, stay in school and reach their goals. The young men from Alabama read the book at the urging of their high school AP math teacher from Restoration Academy. It was a summer book club reading assignment.

University of Alabama Receives $1.7 Million Grant to Increase Number of Latino Nurses

The University of Alabama (UA) Capstone College of Nursing recently received a $1.7 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration Nursing Workforce Diversity Program to increase the number of baccalaureate-prepared Latino nurses. With help from the grant, the university will target and recruit 80 Latino associate degree registered nurses to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree through the College of Nursing’s online RN-BSN program as part of the Bama-Latino Project.

Kim earns GSA’s 2017 Baltes Foundation Award

The Gerontological Society of America (GSA)—the nation’s largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to the field of aging—has chosen Giyeon Kim, PhD, of the University of Alabama as the 2017 recipient of the Margret M. and Paul B. Baltes Foundation Award in Behavioral and Social Gerontology. This distinguished honor, given annually, recognizes outstanding early career contributions in behavioral and social gerontology. Individuals who have received their doctorate within the last ten years are eligible. The award is given by GSA in conjunction with the Margret M. and Paul B. Baltes Foundation.

Automation: Job killer or job creator for Birmingham

Make no mistake: the robots are coming. The big question is what the rise of automation and robotics in manufacturing and other fields will mean for the job market in Birmingham and beyond … Ahmad Ijaz, executive director of the Center for Business and Economic Development at the University of Alabama, said automation creates higher skilled jobs with higher incomes. But workers who have the skills for those new jobs will lose out.

Signs of Lyme disease
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – July 17
If you are playing outside in the summer heat, especially in the woods or high grass, you should be aware of more than just the sun. Ticks can do a lot more than just drink your blood. They also harbor several diseases including Lyme Disease. Dr. Richard Friend with the University of Alabama’s College of Community Health Sciences says the first symptom that you should notice is a circular rash, but there are other signs of infection.

Harrisburg native is ‘Legend in Law’ recipient … and more Neighbors in the News

James Shafter, formerly of Harrisburg, was honored as a “Legend in Law” recipient at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., by Burton Awards for Legal Achievements … Hannah Logsdon of Shawneetown was named to the dean’s list at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa for the spring 2017 semester.

Universities recognize student achievements
Greenfield Reporter (Indiana) – July 17
James H. Edwards, Greenfield, recently received the Hemingway Gold Medal from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at the May 27 commencement for a perfect 4.0 grade point average … Catherine Hancock, McCordsville, recently earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alabama, located in Tuscaloosa. Graduation ceremonies were conducted May 5 through 7.
