Girls State comes to UA
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – June 6
Hundreds of young women are flooding The University of Alabama campus this week learning all about leadership and civic engagement. The 75th session of the American Legion Auxiliary Alabama Girls State runs through Friday. Guest speaker includes Alabama State Treasurer Young Boozer, Alabama Supreme Court Justice Lynn Stewart and many more. Girls State offers delegates an immersive leadership program designed to develop young women as future Alabama leaders.

Flag retirement ceremony held at UA
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – June 6
In remembrance of the 73rd D-Day anniversary, more than 300 young women got to witness a traditional flag retirement ceremony on The University of Alabama campus. Members of Alabama Girls State lined the steps of Gorgas Library to watch the ceremony on the Quad earlier this evening. The ceremony started with Girls State members singing patriotic songs. United States veterans burned a weathered American flag to ashes in order to properly retire it.
 
SummerTide’s “Smoke On The Mountain” continues at SBCT
Mullet Wrapper – June 6
Smoke on the Mountain, a 1930’s musical comedy set in North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains, continues at South Baldwin Theatre through June 30. The curtain will rise every Tuesday through Sunday evening at 8 p.m. The play is presented by The University of Alabama’s professional summer theatre, SummerTide.

SummerTide Drama Camp returns to South Baldwin Community Theatre for its annual three-week session of summer camp for young people beginning June 6. The camp is conducted by the University of Alabama’s SummerTide Theatre group.
