University of Alabama president recaps achievements from past academic year
Tuscaloosa News – June 5
University of Alabama President Stuart Bell on Monday touted the school’s record-breaking enrollment of 37,665 students in a recap of achievements during the 2016-17 academic year. Bell sent an email Monday to faculty, staff, alumni and students with a link to a video compilation of highlights from the past academic year.

UA Professor Emeritus has species named after him

A longtime professor at The University of Alabama now has an ancient species named after him. Two European researchers recently discovered fossils called Archivesica aharoni. It’s named after Paul Aharon. He’s a professor emeritus of Geological Sciences at the campus in Tuscaloosa. The paper about the species was recently published in the Journal of Paleontology.

UA and local leaders work together to build Civil Rights Trail
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – June 5
The University of Alabama and local leaders are working together on building a trail highlighting Tuscaloosa’s Civil Rights history. The Civil Rights Task Force is working on the proposed trail which features about 20 sites around campus and town. Potential points of interest include First African Baptist Church and Fosters Auditorium among many others. Task force members say they want people to think Tuscaloosa when they think civil rights in Alabama.

Notable Honors for Two African American Male Scholars
Journal of Blacks in Higher Education – June 5
Kenon Brown, an assistant professor of advertising and public relations in the College of Communication and Information Sciences at the University of Alabama, received the Early Career Research Award from the International Communication Association. Dr. Brown’s research is focused on how professional athlete’s manage their image and reputation.

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Names Board of Directors

They are: … Margaret P. Garner, MS, RDN, LD, CIC, FAND, Tuscaloosa, Ala., Past Treasurer. Garner is an associate professor of family medicine at the University of Alabama and the executive director of the student health center.

UA sophomore vies for Miss Alabama title

An 18-year-old University of Alabama sophomore will represent Tuscaloosa this week during the Miss Alabama Pageant. Riley Kate Lancaster will compete in the pageant, which begins Wednesday and ends Saturday at Samford University’s Wright Center in Birmingham. Lancaster is the daughter of Reggie and Rebecca Lancaster of Tuscaloosa. She is double majoring in public relations and dance and is on the pre-law track at UA.
