Dr. James Andrews to be inducted into business hall of fame at University of Alabama

Dr. James Andrews is one of six business professionals who will be inducted into the Alabama Business Hall of Fame on the campus of the University of Alabama. The announcement was made by the university’s Culverhouse College of Commerce and reported on the school’s website.

Straughn senior among UA’s health scholars

Straughn High School senior Jessica Aplin experienced college life firsthand this summer through the Rural Health Scholars program at the University of Alabama. The five-week program, offered through UA’s College of Community Health Sciences, introduces students from rural areas to college life and gives them an orientation to the need for health and medical professionals in communities like their own.

Mind healing: our public selves could use some private time

Social and developmental psychologists have long argued that we need both a private and a public persona. We need a public self to allow us to fit into society, and a private self to develop our own uniqueness … Nonetheless, there are reasons to be concerned about a total merging of public and private self. Studies such as those conducted by Robert Lyman at the University of Alabama and Ute Gabriel at the University of Bern show that if we think we’re being watched, we’re more likely to comply with the wishes of those around us, rather than stick to our own beliefs and inclinations.

Hundreds attend Chamber breakfast

The annual breakfast meeting of the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County was highlighted Wednesday with a speech by Charles L. Karr, dean of engineering at the University of Alabama. Karr’s speech was motivational in nature, challenging local business owners to be leaders in the community. “When you start talking about leadership, a lot of people want to know if you are a born leader or if it is something that you develop,” Karr said. “I don’t have a clue, but I can tell you this, anything you work at, you can get better at. You have to work at it to be successful.”

IWP Welcomes 22 Summer Interns

This summer, 22 interns are completing the internship program at The Institute of World Politics. Pryce Albury … Pryce is a student at Norwich University, which is a military school in Vermont. Brianna Bishop: Brianna is a student at the University of Alabama majoring in International Studies with a focus on Russia. She is also studying Russian language. Brianna is an Events and Communications Intern at IWP.
