Latest census data shows aging Calhoun County population
Anniston Star – June 23
Calhoun County might want to review its retirement options. U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday show the county’s senior population grew while most of its younger generations shrank between 2010 and 2016. The aging population is part of an ongoing trend across the state and U.S. that’s placing increasing strain on the healthcare industry, but could also boost retail spending near retirement communities, some industry experts and economists say. . . . Ahmad Ijaz, economist for the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama, said an aging population can place different strains on local economies. “The obvious impact is on the labor force participation rate … there’s less people in the labor force,” Ijaz said. Ijaz said seniors who retire in an area can also boost local economies. “They generally do not tend to spend more than younger people, but their impact is felt more because they usually weren’t living there before they retired.”
