Moundville hosts Saturday in the Park
Tuscaloosa News – June 23
John Parker will lead the session from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the park’s Jones Archaeological Museum. The session is part of the Saturday in the Park series, which highlights the history of southeastern Native American tribes with interactive exhibitions that give attendees glimpses into archaeology, natural history, sustainable gardening and more. Saturday in the Park programs are free with park admission, which is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors 55 years and older and $6 for students. Children 5 years of age and younger and Moundville residents are admitted free.

UA PR Student Earns Grant for Riverkeeper Internship

Hope Runyan, a senior at The University of Alabama, has received a grant from the Curtis and Edith Munson Foundation to work with Black Warrior Riverkeeper, a nonprofit clean water advocacy organization. Runyan, a senior majoring in public relations, will work for the organization as a communications intern throughout the summer.

Pillars of community to be recognized

The 2017 class for the Community Foundation of West Alabama’s Pillars of West Alabama includes business and community leaders, civil rights champions and hall of fame coaches who changed the community by going “over and above.” The annual award presentation will follow a 6 p.m. dinner Thursday at the Indian Hills Country Club in Tuscaloosa. The 2017 class includes Stephen R. Barnette Jr. of Greensboro, Ruth Eaton Cummings Bolden, Babe Ruth Barger McAbee, Thomas W. Moore, Gary Nichols, former University of Alabama gymnastics coach Sarah Patterson, Morris Seymour Sokol and William Andrew Tate. Bolden, McAbee, Sokol and Tate are being posthumously recognized.

Career closet gives students access to professional attire

When Adora Hicks, a Career Advisor with the Career Center, first heard that the center would be building a closet of professional clothes for UA students, she thought it was a cool idea, but didn’t realize just how much she’d be involved.  Now, Hicks is the go-to lady in charge of Crimson Closet, reaching out to local businesses and citizens to see if they have anything they want to donate – including calling up stores that are closing and asking if she can come by and get some items from them.  “Next thing I knew she’s pulling up to little horseshoe here with mannequins in her car,” said Mary Lloyd Lowery, Director of Career Education and Development.
