Health Matters: Pneumonia Vaccination
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – June 21
As we get older, one of the most common preventable infections that we all face a risk of is pneumonia. Pneumonia, still in the United States, kills or cripples thousands of people every year putting them in the hospital, keeping them out of work or out of functioning with their family. Pneumonia is preventable today. Adults, when they reach age 65, or if they have certain chronic medical conditions, need to be thinking about getting a vaccine to prevent it. Maybe Everyone Overhyped Georgia’s Sixth District Election
Federalist – June 22
At some point in the last few months, much of the media and both major political parties decided the special election in Georgia’s sixth district was A Very Important Thing. The combatants were Karen Handel, an otherwise normal Republican who happens to be a woman, and Jon Ossoff, a trendy Democrat with a neat hashtag who didn’t live in the district. Nothing else about the GA-6 contest was all that notable. Connor Mighell is a third-year law student at The University of Alabama School of Law with an undergraduate degree in political philosophy from Baylor University.

UA launches new safety app
Crimson White – June 22
The University of Alabama now has an app dedicated to the safety and assistance of students. Known simply as the UA Safety App, it is available for download on IOS and Android devices. The app will aid students by providing information such as the weather alerts, safety guidelines and the locations of on-campus storm shelters. The app has emergency contact numbers saved and on speed dial, including UAPD, DCH Regional Medical Center and Poison Control.  UA Alerts will also be sent to all devices with the safety app installed. The National Weather Service provides the UA Safety App with up-to-date information in case of weather emergencies.

Romanian, U.S. cadets get ‘Savage’ for a night
DVIDS – June 22
MIHAIL KOGALNICEANU AIR BASE, Romania – As the sun set on Mihail Kogalniceanu, 11 U.S. cadets and 20 Romanian Naval Academy students excitedly stuffed the last of their supplies into their backpacks and prepared for the first Savage Eagle Leader Course. The group of multinational cadets knew what they were up against, but nothing could have prepared them for the tasks that awaited them. The event tested the physical endurance, mental agility and teamwork of all participants. The cadets faced multiple challenges to include land-mine reaction, sandbag combination puzzles and memory challenges. . . . Cadet Zemas Andargachew, from the University of Alabama, took time to reflect on Savage Eagle the morning after the event.  “As Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadets, we have Ranger Challenge, which is pretty intense. But nothing we had done before comes close to how difficult this event was,” said Andargachew.
