University Boulevard Intersection Closes Temporarily

The intersection of University Boulevard and Fifth Avenue/Hilliard Drive will close temporarily Monday, May 8, through Saturday, May 27, during the next phase of an ongoing paving project.

A new connector road between BBVA/Compass Bank and the Capstone College of Nursing will be opened prior to the intersection’s closing. UAPD will be on site Monday to assist with the re-routing of traffic for this next phase of construction.

Motorists also may use 4th Street to access University Medical Center and other areas affected by the intersection closing. The closing is part of the re-paving of a one-half mile stretch of University Boulevard.

Additional Construction Details

UA is replacing the road’s concrete slabs with asphalt and adding medians, landscaping, a transit lane, a bike lane and making lighting improvements. The improvements are focused along a stretch from the University Boulevard and Bryant Drive intersection west to an area near the University Boulevard and 2nd Avenue intersection.

The one-half mile project, scheduled to be completed by Aug. 4, is part of a broader initiative to re-pave University Boulevard from McFarland to downtown.
