Boys State participants do community service
Tuscaloosa News – May 31
A pack of rising seniors from high schools across the state spent part of the afternoon Tuesday trimming back trees, shrubs and brush at Alberta Head Start building and nearby residences in Tuscaloosa as part of the 2017 American Legion Alabama Boys State program. “It’s always a great experience,” Brad Green said, an attorney from Birmingham and volunteer staff member accompanying the boys. About 60 students did yard work at the Head Start building as part of the community service projects on Tuesday. The boys, dressed in light blue shirts and supervised by staff from Boys State and the University of Alabama, worked in groups cutting back oak limbs and tangles of vines while making piles of debris on the curb for pickup. The annual weeklong program at the University of Alabama draws about 600 male high school students from across the state for hands-on learning that emphasizes leadership, citizenship and service. A similar annual program, Alabama Girls State, is scheduled for June 4-9 at UA.
