Two with Tuscaloosa ties earn state arts award
Tuscaloosa News – May 22
New York native Don Noble moved to Tuscaloosa in 1969, to begin a career teaching American literature at the University of Alabama. Though he retired from UA in 2001, his educational role goes on through the Alabama Public Television literary series “Bookmark,” and the more than 750 book reviews written for The Tuscaloosa News and public radio, focusing on Southern literature. Through the nearly 400 episodes of “Bookmark,” created in 1988, Noble has interviewed other Governor’s Arts Awards winners, such as native Alabamians Winston Groom and Rick Bragg. “I am particularly delighted to win this prize because it’s not all that common for people from New York to win prizes in Alabama,” Noble said in a written release. “But I’ve lived in Alabama for 48 years, and that’s a long time. It is really nice to be recognized by Alabama, my adopted state.”
