University of Alabama adds third day for graduation ceremonies
Tuscaloosa News – May 1
The University of Alabama is adding a third day for spring graduation ceremonies because of the number of graduates. The university is preparing for about 5,300 students to graduate in the spring with about 4,400 planning to walk, bringing the total graduates for the year to 8,000, UA President Stuart Bell said. The ceremonies will be held this weekend in Coleman Coliseum.

University of Alabama: Ten University of Alabama students studying African American and women’s studies have curated an exhibit about identity at the Paul R. Jones Gallery in downtown Tuscaloosa. . . . Two University of Alabama historians, Michael Innis-Jiménez and Andrew Huebner, were recently appointed distinguished lecturers of the Organization of American Historians . . . The University of Alabama has welcomed the 11th cohort of Coca-Cola First Generation Scholars to campus. Among them is Rhonalda Bonner of Aliceville. The Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship program was established at UA in 2006.

August 21, 2013, marked the first day of my collegiate career. Though that day might seem uneventful to the rest of the world, it was not for me. I remember that day vividly. An overwhelming mix of emotions of excitement, anticipation and fear consumed me all at once. Why am I here? What is my purpose? What will these next four years hold? I remember walking through the Quad on the way to my first class.

UA hosts lecture on autism and anxiety

Autism affects a child’s behavior, but how does autism affect the child? A researcher from Virginia Tech spoke to a researcher from The University of Alabama to share her research. Dr. Susan White spoke to Psychology students at the Capstone about Autism and Anxiety.
 
Yorktown High Alum Graduates Summa Cum Laude From Alabama

A Yorktown High School graduate has been making her mark in Tuscaloosa. Allyson Pitzel, who graduated Yorktown in 2013, recently received the Summa Cum Laude Award from the University of Alabama. Pitzel is majoring in the Multiple Abilities Program. Pitzel will be certified K-6 elementary and special education.

Dogs at Dots
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – April 29
Tuscaloosa residents brought their furry friends to Miss Dots’ restaurant for Dogs at Dots. The event, put on by a University of Alabama public relations class raised money for the Humane Society of West Alabama.

SGA plans to create Counseling Center fund

Recognizing the growing need for increased mental health awareness and resources on campus, SGA President Jared Hunter has united with several Greek organizations to start preliminary planning on a trust fund that will serve to benefit the University of Alabama Counseling Center. Hunter is attempting to deliver on his campaign promise to raise mental health awareness by creating a trust fund that the UA Counseling Center will have at its disposal.

UA cheerleader to cheer for Team USA
WTOK-ABC (Meridian, Mississippi) – April 28
West Lauderdale product, Millery Null, is representing the United States in the International Cheer Union World Championships in Orlando, Florida this week. Thousands of cheerleaders from 119 countries are taking part in the event. Millery is currently in her third year at The University of Alabama.

PORT RAIL: Do we learn better from victories or defeats?

I always thought that I learned best from defeats rather than victories. I recently read a commentary on Psalms 20: 6-8 that got me to thinking. Those particular verses have to do with remembering and invoking the power of the Lord. The commentary also drew on Deuteronomy 7:18-19 in which the Hebrews are reminded by the Lord of what he did for them in Egypt, and to fully expect him to protect them in the future against all their enemies. Tuesday job fair to host 24 employers

Twenty-four employers will seek to hire new workers at a Tuscaloosa Job Fair on Tuesday. The Tuscaloosa Career Center and the University of Alabama Culverhouse College of Commerce will host a job fair designed to help participants in the LIFT program (Learning Initiative and Financial Training) find jobs, but the fair is also open to the public.
