UA Remembers April 27

At 5:13 p.m. on April 27, 2011, an EF4 tornado touched down in Tuscaloosa, tearing apart buildings and lives in its path. While The University of Alabama was spared physical damage, six UA students and one UA employee died as a result of the tornado’s force. The event forever changed the city and the UA community.

Although the tornado ripped through Tuscaloosa, it also brought people together. And in its aftermath, the UA spirit of kindness flowed throughout the community in numerous ways. Students, faculty and staff took action collectively and independently, providing help and healing to those in need.

This week, we remember the lives lost and the courage of the survivors. On Thursday, April 27, at 5:13 p.m., Denny Chimes will toll 53 times in honor of those who died in Tuscaloosa in 2011. Please pause to remember the historic day that will always be a part of our history and our hearts.
