UA Creative Campus Event Features YouTube Stars

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama’s Creative Campus is hosting “#blkComedy: A Night of Comedy in a Handheld World” featuring YouTube stars Trey Moe and Xavier Burgin.

The event, which explores the creative process of young black comedians and filmmakers who use social media as their main platform, will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, in Russell Auditorium. It’s free and open to the public.

“This event will give the audience a special glimpse into how to brand and market themselves, no matter what industry they want to enter,” said Tiana Raimist-Carter, a Creative Campus intern. “By bringing Trey and Xavier to campus, we hope to inspire current students and show them the possibilities of their future.”

Moe, a comedian, and Burgin, a writer and director, are both involved in comedy through such online platforms as YouTube and Twitter. Moe has more than 400,000 followers on his YouTube channel, “TheTreyMoeShow.” Burgin has made appearances at film festivals and was been invited to the first Sundance Institute YouTube New Voices Lab.

Both Moe and Burgin have been selected as fellows by organizations to learn how to further hone their skills and create a brand that resonates, said Anthony Lipscomb, a Creative Campus intern.

“We’ve seen black comedians on campus before, but they are already established and well known,” Lipscomb said. “Trey and Xavier are just getting started, making that next step into their journey, so this is something new and fresh.”
