Staying Healthy One Step at a Time

Staying Healthy One Step at a Time

The Office of Health Promotion and Wellness wants to help employees get and stay healthier. One of the best ways to do that is to get moving. UA employee David Wilson, director of Alumni Funds, shared how he manages to balance exercise with work. David has worked at the University for 26 years. In 1982, he met his now-wife of 31 years, Dr. Liza Wilson, at the Ferguson Center when they were both student workers. Liza is an associate dean in the College of Education. They have two children: David is a UA graduate and Pete is a UA freshman.

What do you do to keep active and be healthy throughout the week?

Since my college years at UA, I have been running almost every day of the week. I joined the UA Aquatic Center and attempt to run during lunch. If unable to run during lunch, I go after work.

What motivates you to exercise and stay active?

Running is my quiet time and I have been known to run for one to two hours before stopping. It helps me focus on issues that are on my mind. Also, I want to enjoy an active life during my retirement years. My wife has been exercising with me, which I really enjoy.

What are your barriers to keeping physically active?

Sometimes work; however, this is usually only for a day or two.

Are there any health-related goals you have achieved lately?

Yes, losing weight to meet my goals for the WellBama promotion. I enjoy my hamburgers, steaks and buffet lines but had to pull back for the weigh-in. I accomplished my goals and that night went to a buffet for dinner. Yes, it was a fantastic dinner.
