10 (Fun) Things to do Before the Semester Ends

10 (Fun) Things to do Before the Semester Ends

1. Take a Selfie at Marr’s Spring

The water source for the University in the old days, Marr’s Spring has been restored to its original beauty and is a favorite spot for studying, relaxing and enjoying nature. If you want a picture of yourself at all the important UA landmarks, you can’t miss Marr’s Spring on Marr’s Spring Rd.

2. View the Heavens

Each month the department of physics and astronomy opens up
the wonders of the night sky through telescopes at either
Gallalee Hall or Moundville Archaeological Park.

All sky viewings are dependent on clear weather.
Don’t miss your chance to see Jupiter, star clusters, galaxies,
nebulae and the waxing moon.

3. Tour the Gorgas House Museum

Step inside the oldest structure on campus and imagine being a student here in 1831.

See the house as it was when the influential Gorgas family lived there. In addition to the permanent collection of Gorgas belongings, temporary exhibitions are mounted periodically through the year.

4. Take in an Art Exhibit

Both indoor and outdoor art abounds on our campus and downtown. Stroll the sculpture garden in Woods Quad or visit one of the art galleries. Exhibitions by renowned artists, faculty and students change throughout the year, and permanent collections are rich in contemporary and African-American art.

5. Drop by International Coffee Hour

Stop in at 121 BB Comer Hall on Fridays
between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. for International Coffee Hour, a Capstone International Center program that brings together UA students from the United States and 77 foreign countries over coffee, tea and snacks. Expand your world, break down cultural barriers and meet new friends.

6. Go Climb a Wall

Looking for a physical challenge?

The Rec Center indoor climbing facility offers bouldering opportunities (climbing below 12 feet without ropes).

Bouldering, top rope and lead climbing are offered at the Witt Activity Center. The first visit of each semester is free. Be prepared to sign a waiver of responsibility and receive an orientation from the staff prior to climbing.

7. Visit the Bryant Museum

Whether you grew up shouting “Roll Tide!” or said it for the first time as a student, the Paul W. Bryant Museum has something for you. Catch a vision of what collegiate sports have meant at UA, and what UA has meant to the pursuit of athletic excellence. Bring your ACT card for free admission.

8. Attend the Sakura Festival

Venture out to the Green at Midtown Village on April 1 from 1-4 p.m. for the
31st annual Sakura, or Cherry Blossom, Festival, a celebration of Japanese culture.
This year’s festival theme is spring, or “Haru.”

Enjoy games, dancing, sword demonstrations, art exhibits and more.

9. Stroll the Arboretum

Ten minutes from campus is a 60-acre haven from traffic and noise.
Hike 2.5 miles of walking trails through native woodlands while enjoying the
gardens, birds and wildflowers. View the forest canopy from the 30-foot-tall tree platform.

The UA Arboretum is sponsored by the department
of biological sciences in the College of Arts & Sciences.

10. Enjoy a Recital

Enjoy an evening of music and support your fellow students at the same time. Attend a student music recital at Moody Music Building or Bryant Jordan Hall. Choose from performances of voice or percussion, wind and string instruments. Some faculty, guest and group performances are also free, while others are ticketed events at reasonable cost. Visit the School of Music calendar of events to learn more.
