University of Alabama building $10 million facility for athletes with disabilities

The University of Alabama is building a $10 million facility for athletes with disabilities. The groundbreaking was Feb. 23 in Tuscaloosa. Construction is scheduled to finish in late Fall 2017. It will be located along the south façade of the UA Rec Center, east of the main entrance. According to a story on the school’s website, the two-story building will include a NCAA regulation game venue for wheelchair basketball, locker rooms, workout/training room, strength and conditioning room, team meeting rooms and study halls.

UA cyber security researcher explains CloudFare data leak

A University of Alabama cyber security researcher says it could turn out to be one of the largest internet security incidents ever. Matthew Hudnall is talking about a mistake made by CloudFlare, a company he says protects sites like Uber and FitBit from cyber security threats. “It’s a very, very concerning security incident given the fact that we don’t even know the breadth or scope of the incident,” said Hudnall, who believes the mistake centers around one wrong character in the company’s security code.

Historical marker to memorialize lynchings in Tuscaloosa County

The first historical marker to memorialize the lives of Black men lynched in Tuscaloosa County will be unveiled on March 6 by the Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit human rights law firm out of Montgomery. While the EJI has been working to memorialize lynchings in Montgomery, the Tuscaloosa marker is thanks to the work of University of Alabama students in the new history class “Southern Memory: Lynching in the South,” UA News reports.
 
Department of Anthropology speaker addresses racism’s effect on health

Bindon Lecture discussed the connectivity of race relations and health issues in the Black community on Monday evening. Studies focused on racism’s link to high blood pressure among African-Americans have influenced Gravlee travel the globe and dedicate thousands of work hours to investigate racially-charged inequalities in health and medicine for nearly two decades.
 
‘Killer of Sheep’ to screen at UA Monday for Black History Month

Black History month is wrapping up and the theme at the University of Alabama is “Crisis in Black Education” The University’s Black History Month events tackles challenges in education from pre-school to graduate, poverty and more. A screening called Killer of Sheep: Black families and poverty, 40 years later is scheduled for Monday Feb. 27. UA Assistant English Professor Lamar Wilson said the film challenges us to consider what poverty has done to tear African American families apart.

UA sorority starts Tide Together Fund for students in need

Watermelon industry crowns 2017 national queen

The watermelon industry crowned its 2017 National Watermelon Queen and passed the leadership baton of the National Watermelon Association at its 103rd annual conference Feb. 22-25 at snowy Lake Tahoe. The conference is a reunion of sorts for the “watermelon family,” as Bob Morrissey, executive director of the association, describes the group’s members, and the event included plenty of fun along with association updates, education, recognitions and awards. At the NWA annual awards banquet Feb. 25, the association crowned Madison Laney, the 2016 Alabama watermelon queen, as the 2017 National Watermelon Queen. Laney, a senior at the University of Alabama majoring in human environmental studies with a concentration in fashion design, will serve as the industry’s public relations representative, promoting watermelon at events organized by the National Watermelon Promotion Board.

OLLI hosts lecture on pet education

With pet population issues on the rise, education is crucial for proper care for pets. On Wednesday, March 1 the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) program at The University of Alabama will present the Canine Compassion OLLI Bonus session from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the Bryant Conference Center. Kathy Chastine, who is a support assistant with the OLLI program, and Patti Trethaway, who is a member of the OLLI program and tasked with planning bonus sessions, planned the event.

Tuscaloosa News wins highest honor from APSE

The Tuscaloosa News has been honored with the highest award by the Associated Press Sports Editors for the fourth time in the last five years, garnering Grand Slam status for top-10 finishes in the daily sections, special sections, Sunday sections and website categories in its division for work done in 2016. . . . Tuscaloosa News intern and University of Alabama student Tyler Waldrep received a top-five honor in long video for his video on the UA men’s tennis team training with the school’s ROTC program.
