UA Offers Students of Color Leadership Summit

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s Division of Student Life presents the Students of Color Leadership Summit from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, in the Ferguson Center Ballroom.

The one-day summit allows students, faculty and staff members to unite for one day of educational sessions and dialogue surrounding the topics of global leadership, ethics, values and self-care.

Attendees will hear from noted leadership experts and participate in small-group discussions with their peers. Break-out session topics include “Developing Leadership Capacity through Engagement with Community,” “Salary NegotiationandTroubling the Waters: Life as a Black Graduate Student.”

Among the highlights is a talk by Dr. Rick Kittles, professor in the department of surgery at the University of Arizona.

Kittles is the leader of the Washington, D.C.-based African Ancestry Inc., a genetic testing service for determining individuals’ African ancestry, which he co-founded with Gina Paige in February 2003. He will speak on “Race Racism and Biomedical Research” at 2:30 p.m.

Other keynote speakers include Dr. Vincent Willis, assistant professor in New College, who will give a talk at 10 a.m. titled “Navigating Tumultuous Terrain; Historical Lessons on Finding Your Voice During a Storm.”

In addition, Montre Carodine, a professor of law at UA, will speak at noon on “Challenges in Education: Finding Your Creative Space in a Hostile Place.”

“I am excited to have partnered with the UA campus community to bring about such an amazing and collaborative event,” said Gretchen Moore, assistant director of the Center for Service and Leadership, which is a co-sponsor of this event. “I know we will truly be meeting the needs expressed to us by students who brought the idea to us.”

Other sponsors include the Black Faculty and Staff Association, Black Faculty and Staff Student Ambassadors, Black Student Union, Blackburn Institute, Capstone International, Career Center, Center for Service and Leadership, Crossroads, Division of Student Life, the department of gender and race studies, Ferguson Student Center, the UA Law School, UA Counseling Center, National Association of Black Accountants, National Pan-Hellenic Council, ROTC, University Programs and the Women and Gender Resource Center.
