Greg Byrne ready to roll as new University of Alabama athletics director
Dothan Eagle – Jan. 20
Greg Byrne, formally introduced Thursday as Alabama’s new director of athletics, brings a young man’s energy but an old man’s head to the job. He has been around college athletics his entire life. His father was AD at Oregon, Nebraska and Texas A&M. There’s a photo in Greg’s office at the University of Arizona where young Greg is riding on his dad’s shoulders while they were participating in a walk-a-thon fundraiser. “Fund-raising has changed over the years,” the 45-year-old Byrne said, cracking a smile. Byrne’s introductory remarks were followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer session with Crimson Tide beat reporters. He seemed to strike the right chord of honoring Alabama’s past, respecting its present and looking out for its future.
