UA Professor Returns to White House for Champions of Change Reunion

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Suzanne Horsley, an associate professor in The University of Alabama College of Communication and Information Sciences, headed back to the White House for the Champions of Change Reunion today.

The reunion event is meant to conclude the program under President Obama’s administration and create discussions about progress in the various areas that the program has highlighted over the years, such as climate equity, living wage, expanding fair chance opportunities and sustainable and climate-smart agriculture, among others.

Today features a full day of sessions, and the group will tour the White House Tuesday.

Horsley was nominated for the Champions of Change program in 2012 for her long-time work with the American Red Cross and her initiative to involve students in volunteerism raising money for Red Cross disaster relief following the damage done by the tornado in April 2011.

She was one of nine Red Cross volunteers recognized for their work building resilient communities at home and abroad.

The White House Champions of Change program honors everyday Americans doing extraordinary things in their communities. It began as an initiative in 2011 to profile Americans whose work helps the country rise to the many challenges of the 21st century. More information about the program can be found here.

Horsley is posting status updates to Twitter and Facebook during her trip to D. C.
