BEST BETS

SWIPE WAY HUNGER — A UA student-run program and Bama Dining are prepared to deliver 500 Thanksgiving meals to an area soup kitchen Wednesday, Nov. 23. The program, called Swipe Away Hunger, collected unused guest passes from more than 500 UA students at dining halls. Students essentially “swiped” a meal. Bama Dining is taking funds allotted from these swipes to provide more than 500 meals to people served by the East Tuscaloosa Community Soup Bowl. On Nov. 23, Bama Dining will prepare the meals and send them by vans, courtesy of UA’s Center for Service and Leadership, to the soup bowl at Hargrove United Methodist Church, 1812 Hargrove Road East. The vans will pick up the meals at 9 a.m. at Lakeside Dining Hall.  For more details, contact Richard LeComte, media relations, rllecomte@ur.ua.edu, 205/348-3782.

THANKSGIVING WEEK BRINGS MORE CAR CRASHES – The three days just before Thanksgiving are some of the worst times of the year to be on the road in Alabama, according to a recent study of traffic data by UA’s Center for Advanced Public Safety. For more information, contact Adam Jones, engineering media relations, at 205/348-6444 or acjones12@eng.ua.edu.

‘ZOMBIES’ SPOTTED ON UA CAMPUS – A herd of brain-eating, A+ seeking, roll-tide yelling zombies will swarm UA’s Quad Nov. 29 from 2-3:15 p.m. to protest for zombie rights. Once the swarm amasses upon the steps of Gorgas Library they’ll present a Zombie Bill of Rights. The Zombie Walk is part of a Dystopian/Apocalyptic Literature class. Dr. Bonnie Whitener, an English instructor, is teaching the class this semester. For more information, contact Jamon Smith, UA media relations, at 205/348-4956 or jamon.smith@ua.edu

UA MOCK TRIAL TEAM WINS MID-SOUTH INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT – Over Veteran’s Day weekend, the Alabama Mock Trial Team won the Mid-South Invitational, one of the largest collegiate mock trial tournaments in the country. The team competed against more than 50 mock trial teams from 31 universities, which included traditional mock trial powerhouses like Rhodes College, Florida State University and Vanderbilt University. This was the first time the 5-year-old mock trial team won the tournament with students who were first-timers. In addition to the team win, seven of the team’s 10 students won individual awards. CURRENT COMMENT

STILL NO RAIN? – In the approximate three months that Alabama has experienced drought conditions, the severity of the drought has progressed from abnormally dry to an extreme drought. Some parts of the state are even experiencing the highest level of drought, which is an exceptional drought. Dr. Sagy Cohen, a UA assistant professor of geography who specializes in global hydrology, is available to comment on what’s going on and what it means for the state.
