ODS Testing Space Near Capacity

Testing space at the Office of Disability Services (ODS) for Fall 2016 finals is almost full; space is available on Friday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. and at 6 p.m. Students with disabilities who call to schedule exams are being directed back to their instructors for the provision of testing accommodations.

Accommodations for students who qualify and who have followed University procedure must be provided as per federal law.

Faculty members are responsible for providing testing accommodations for students when ODS space is unavailable. If space is not readily available, faculty should work with their department chairs and the dean’s office for help in finding rooms and proctors for the administration of accommodated exams.

Exam accommodations in other locations must meet the same standards as if students were being tested at ODS:

  • The entire amount of extended time for which the student has been approved must be allotted.
  • Students should not be pressured to hurry.
  • The testing environment must not be located close to heavily traveled hallways, ringing phones, office machinery, lobbies, or in offices where others are working and conversing.

Many students do not want their peers to know they have a disability, so discretion should be exercised to protect their privacy where they are seated. Do nothing to identify students publicly, including the following:

  • Do not ask students with disabilities to raise their hands if they need testing space.
  • Do not ask them to stand up and follow you to a different room if they plan on using accommodations.
  • Do not have them test in the hallway.
