Faculty Accolades — Nov. 4, 2016

Dr. Ian Brown, anthropology, published “Marking Graves in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama: The Musings of a Teacher.” Borgo Press, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Susan Caples, associate director in Enterprise Operations, received national recognition from the National Association of College Auxiliary Services. The 2016 Dr. Wright L. Lassiter, Jr. Legacy Award is based on an individual’s leadership and outstanding service to NACAS and a commitment to volunteerism and community service. 

Jane Cassidy, art and art history, was commissioned by Atlanta’s Tony Award-winning Alliance Theatre to create a space-themed installation for newborns to 2-year-olds and their caregivers as part of Alliance’s Theatre for the Very Young Series. Cassidy collaborated with Dashboard Projects’ sculptor Kelly O’Brien, and dance and performance collective Fly On A Wall. More than 1,200 babies and caregivers took part in the interactive performance from May to September.

Alan L. Durham, Law School, published “Patent Scope and Enablement in Rapidly Developing Arts,” 94 North Carolina Law Review 1099-1164 (2016). 

Paul Horwitz, Law School, published “Against Martyrdom: A Liberal Argument for Accommodation of Religion,” 91 Notre Dame Law Review 1301-1340 (2016).

Dr. Pamela Payne-Foster, College of Community Health Sciences, recently received The University of Alabama School of Medicine Dean’s Research Award for the “Development of a Culturally Competent Training Program for Medical Students and Residents at the Tuscaloosa Regional Campus.” The award was for developing a half-day training session for UA’s Rural Health Conference, which will be held March 30-31, 2017. The topic for the 18th annual conference, hosted by the College and the Institute, is women’s health.

Pete Schulte, art and art history, had works included in Atlanta’s Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia exhibition, Abstraction Today. Schulte also had two recent solo exhibitions. Drawings in graphite, gouache and ink on paper made up Schulte’s No More Snake Oil Bluesat the Jeff Bailey Gallery, Hudson, New York, and his paintings in enamel on aluminum were included in Letter Edged In Black 5: The Black Object, at the Biggin Gallery at Auburn University.

Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic, Law School, published “Critical Perspectives on Police, Policing, and Mass Incarceration,” 104 Georgetown Law Journal 1531-1557 (2016).

Dr. Vikki Vandiver, dean of the School of Social Work, was recently recognized by the Council on Social Work Education Council on the Role and Status of Women in Social Work Education Mentor Recognition Program. The Mentor Recognition Program honors mentors who have made a difference and supports the activities of the Women’s Council. She was nominated by members of the UA School of Social Work in recognition of her efforts to promote the visibility of women in the field of social work.
