Thousands expected for Native American festival in Moundville
Tuscaloosa News – Oct. 4
Organizers expect more than 10,000 people to attend during the four-day Native American Festival, which begins Wednesday at Moundville Archaeological Park. “Funneling that many people is a challenge,” said Alex Benitez, director of the park, which is part of the University of Alabama’s Museums. “But we’re going to keep getting better. We are UA Museums’ largest event of the year, so we want controlled chaos, where everyone is having a good time and the staff is focusing on the festival itself.”

It won’t be set up like a lecture, but rather a community gathering where stories are told and discussions are held. “It’s not meant to be rigid,” said Adam McGrew, a sophomore majoring in political science and international studies and Creative Campus intern. “It’s meant to be free flowing, so we want people to be relaxed; we want people to come and learn and be open.”

UA students campaign against social injustice by encouraging positive change in community
ABC 33/40 (Birmingham) – Oct. 4
Dozens of University of Alabama students are part of a new organization called D.R.E.A.M. which stands for dynamically reversing everything around me. The group campaigns against social injustices by making a positive impact on the community. This week, their focus is on police brutality. “Activism without action means nothing,” Teryn Shipman, D.R.E.A.M. President, said. Shipman told ABC 33/40 she is working to prove making a difference can start right on campus. “If we look back at the Civil Rights Movement, they were the ones that lead the movement, they were the voice, they were the people that made a difference, so with us being college students and sort of history repeating itself, it wouldn’t be a more perfect way to express how we feel about what’s going on in our communities and take action,” Shipman said.
