UA student Shelby Baron competes in Paralympic Games

Twenty-two former and current University of Alabama athletes are in Rio competing in the Paralympic Games…Shelby Baron comes with a variety of identities. She comes from Hawaii. She’s a student at The University of Alabama. And this week, she’s representing America at the Paralympics in Rio.

Several Paralympians competing in Rio were trained in Alabama

The U.S.A. Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team defeated France 93-37 in the first day of competition at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. The team is made up of three players with Alabama ties, joining several athletes competing for gold in the Rio games. “There is a level of pride hard to describe,” Lakeshore Foundation Athletics Director Lisa Hilborn said. The Homewood-based facility has a rich history of training athletes for the Olympics and Paralympics. The current games in Rio are no different. Among those with the most prominent ties to Lakeshore is the wheelchair rugby team, which wrapped up training last month at Lakeshore … Among the athletes with Alabama ties: U.S.A. Women’s Wheelchair Basketball: Desiree Miller (University of Alabama), MacKenzie Soldan (University of Alabama), Abby Dunkin (Florence); U.S.A. Men’s Wheelchair Basketball: Brian Bell (Birmingham), Jared Arambula (University of Alabama).

Bryant-Denny Stadium’s clear bag policy begins Saturday

The University of Alabama will implement its new clear-bag policy for football games at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday when the Crimson Tide hosts Western Kentucky. Bags and purses carried into the stadium “must be clear plastic, vinyl or PVC, and cannot exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches in size,” according to the policy, which also allows clutch purses that do not exceed 4 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches (with or without a handle or strap.)

Three brothers cheer together for UA

And you thought you were looking forward to Alabama’s home opener. Not as much as the Vaughn brothers, Jed, Zach and Elijah – the sibling trio now cheering together for the first time on the same spirit squad at The University of Alabama. Of course, they’re looking forward to Saturday’s game against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.

UA student eliminated from American Ninja Warrior

University of Alabama senior Casey Suchocki’s run on “American Ninja Warrior” ended with a fall into a pool of water on the first stage of the finals in Las Vegas. The slip during the show that aired Aug. 29 ended a promising run that began in Atlanta as a walk-on, but the experience was still a dream come true. “It was still a huge feat for me to get there,” he said. It was a chance to learn from and compete with top athletes in the sport.

This exhibit of a selection of historic quilts from the collections of the University of Alabama Department of Human and Environmental Science will feature six quilts from the Ragland African American quilt collection as well as local 19th-century signature quilts.
