Visit Alabama’s Capitol (no, not Montgomery…)

Ninety years after its last use, Alabama’s first capitol building is now open for visitors. The Alabama Historical Commission and The University of Alabama are hosting an “Artifact Day” at Old Cahawba tomorrow. The event will allow the public to work alongside professional researchers to learn more about the site of Alabama’s first state house. Site Director Linda Derry says when the capitol building was uncovered, Alabamians deserved a chance to learn from it.

Nine authors with Alabama ties honored

Nine authors with ties to Alabama were inducted Thursday night into the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame at the University of Alabama. This year’s inductees were Edward O. Wilson, Fannie Flagg, Rodney Jones, Rebecca Gilman, Truman Capote, T.S. Stribling, Margaret Walker, Mary Ward Brown and Sequoyah. Wilson is a UA graduate and Birmingham native who works as a research professor and emeritus in entomology for the department of organismic and evolutionary biology at Harvard University. He is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner and has written several books, including “Anthill” set in Alabama. He is considered to be the world’s leading expert on the study of ants.

University of Alabama regains black alumni chapter

After several years without one, the University of Alabama has a black alumni chapter once again. This chapter, named the University of Alabama Black Alumni Association (UABAA), became a charter member of the University of Alabama National Alumni Association back in August, and this weekend’s Homecoming serves as the chapter’s major debut.

Friends, family honor memory of UA alum killed in car wreck with scholarship

Friends and family of the University of Alabama alum killed in a car accident are honoring his memory with the Zach Koch Memorial Scholarship. Koch was killed last March in a car wreck on Interstate 20/59 in Fosters. He went missing and was later found in his car down a steep embankment. The scholarship will be awarded to a sophomore level or higher graphic design or digital photography major. Zach Koch graduated from Alabama in December 2015.

Driven to succeed: Diman, Univ of Ala. students work on energy-efficient Camaro
Southcoast Today (Mass.) – Sept. 30
Diman students have been working, long distance, with students at the University of Alabama to create an energy-efficient Camaro. On Tuesday, in the Diman restaurant, members of the Alabama team got together with members of Diman faculty to discuss how to grow and expand the partnership between the two. A lot of it is about the future. “If there are going to be driverless cars, for instance — and there will — I don’t want this school to become functionally obsolescent,” said Tom Aubin, superintendent-director of Diman. The car Diman is helping the University of Alabama to build is not driverless. The vehicle will be an electric hybrid.

UA Arboretum caretaker discusses drought conditions

As we learned from University of Alabama Arboretum caretaker Joseph Wright, drought conditions like the ones we’re experiencing now can cause much more than foliage loss. “It also allows insects and diseases to more effectively invade the plants, and as a result it might get a fungus or some sort of bores or something get into some of our plants or a tree that’s usually able to fight those off, but because of these conditions, it’s a weakened tree or shrub and it can’t defend itself.”

This time tomorrow, the Quad at The University of Alabama will be glowing with the light from a bonfire. It’s Homecoming at The Capstone. Before the bonfire and pep-rally there’s a step show at Coleman Coliseum. It starts at 8:30, tickets start at $12.

A new art exhibit in Tuscaloosa suggests a link between painting and music

A new exhibit of abstract art in Tuscaloosa is influenced by the world of music, calling to minds the sounds and improvisations of a live band. From Sept. 29 – Nov. 4 the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art in 103 Garland Hall will be hosting an exhibit by the artist Pinkney Herbert, titled: “Distilled – The Narrative Transformed.” The exhibit itself was organized and overseen by the Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. “Distilled” traveled to Tuscaloosa from Knoxville upon request.

Beat Auburn Beat Hunger kicks off for the 22nd year this Saturday, Oct. 1. WHO: Beat Auburn, Beat Beat Hunger. WHAT: The goal is to collect more pounds of food than Auburn each year. Out of the 22 years the program has run, the University has beat Auburn only 10 times. To celebrate this year’s kick off, an official kick off event with food and games will be held to begin the campaign against the Tigers.

One of many Homecoming activities here at The University of Alabama this week is the blood drive. Homecoming organizers have paired with LifeSouth for the past several years. This blood drive is an important part of generating their yearly supply of blood.
