BP bill has narrow window
Florence Times Daily – Sept. 3
Lawmakers will go into the final three days of a special session Tuesday to address the use of money from the settlement of an oil spill lawsuit against British Petroleum. There is, however, little optimism of any agreement among legislators. Much of the split is along geographical lines. At stake is road construction, debt payment and filling a funding gap in Medicaid. “The people most affected by the BP oil spill feel they need to get a generous portion of it,” said Bill Stewart, retired professor of political science at the University of Alabama. “But Medicaid, as we all know, helps the sick and poor among us. They need money.”

Elephant population plunges due to poaching
Tuscaloosa News – Sept. 3
Africa’s elephant population is decreasing dramatically due to poaching, plunging by more than 140,000 between 2007 and 2014, according to a study published last week …”This is something we’re very much aware of which is why we started the organization,” said Tide for Tusks co-founder Reata Strickland. “Being members of the UA community and with our mascot being an African elephant, we felt like we should do what we could at home and that’s to raise awareness and let people know what’s happening to these beautiful animals.” . . .  “There should not be any ivory trade. There should be a global ban,” Strickland said. “Many conservation groups are calling for a global ban on the trade of ivory to stop it.” She’s hoping that Elephant Awareness Week, set for Sept. 19-24 on the University of Alabama campus, will help spread the word about the dangers of buying ivory.
