Session with law enforcement aims to lower communication barriers
Tuscaloosa News – Sept. 13
Tuscaloosa Police Sgt. Lachlan Chronister hadn’t been working patrol long when he encountered a person who is deaf during a traffic stop. “It stuck with me, how little ability I had to communicate with that person,” he said. “So much of our job is communicating. Probably about 90 percent of what we do is about getting something across to someone.” Now that he’s in charge of training rookie officers, Chronister decided to organize a session at the University of Alabama to help officers with that communication barrier. Darrin Griffin, assistant professor of communications studies at UA, and Erin Powell, an interpreter who is teaching an American Sign Language class in the university’s Honors College this semester, talked to the officers about different issues to consider when policing the deaf.

ABC 33/40 (Birmingham) – Sept. 13
More than three years since the state shut it down, VictoryLand casino is back-up and running with electronic bingo machines. Yes, Alabama’s constitution still prohibits games of chance, and lotteries. You may remember, it was last November when Governor Robert Bentley issued an executive order that took away the Attorney General’s authority to enforce the state’s gaming laws … Steve Flowers is a political analyst for the University of Alabama. He explains how Governor Bentley’s executive order allowed for this to happen. “They’ve given the people the authority to say what the law is in this case,’ said Flowers. “In this case, the sheriff of Macon County is the king of determining what’s legal in this county.”
