Alcohol-free tailgating area to open University of Alabama game days
Tuscaloosa News – Aug. 30
The University of Alabama is opening the southwest corner of Bryce lawn as a family-friendly, alcohol-free tailgating zone starting with the first home football game on Sept. 10. “It is kind of an alternative for fans looking for a new place to tailgate. Again, it is more family-centered, an area for children to play,” said Nick Frenz, associate director of event management with UA’s transportation services.

Lottery issue not going away
Decatur Daily – Aug. 30
The Alabama senator who got within one Statehouse vote of getting a proposed lottery to Alabamians said Tuesday he’ll be back with another lottery bill “when the time is right.” Meanwhile, Statehouse watchers say to pass the Legislature, a successful lottery bill would have to be negotiated with least two major interest groups … Bill Stewart, the former chairman of the University of Alabama’s political science department, said there were multiple special interests involved, including those who oppose any type of gaming and those who thought Bentley’s bill was too narrow. “Gov. Bentley proposed a simple lottery, but others wanted more than that,” Stewart said.

Jerusalem’s biggest Crimson Tide fan ready for Alabama football season
Alabama News Center – Aug. 31
As football season approaches, the battle cry of the defending national champions, the Alabama Crimson Tide, is rising up from Tuscaloosa to Dallas to New York to Jerusalem. Jerusalem? The last thing one might expect to find on the ancient streets of Jerusalem is anything having to do with American football – especially Alabama football. Along David Street, leading from Jaffa Gate to the Wailing Wall, there is the aroma of jasmine, rosewater and saffron. Vendors offer engraved leather and Mosaic boxes, Middle Eastern jewelry, spices, handmade soap, Jewish menorahs, Christian olivewood crosses and Muslim prayer rugs. The place beckons to a time when all three monotheistic religions shared similar stories and familiar heroes. This is where the Old and New Testaments were born. It is where the Quran played an important role. It is where the Torah was penned. It is also where a storeowner named Hani Imam says “Roll Tide!” several times a day.
